About PaycheckCalculator.fyi
A precise, beautifully visual US paycheck calculator.
Our mission
PaycheckCalculator.fyi exists to demystify the gap between gross salary and what actually lands in your bank account. Every input updates the breakdown live, so you can see exactly where each dollar goes.
Methodology
- Federal income tax: 2024 progressive brackets for Single, Married Filing Jointly, and Head of Household, with the standard deduction applied.
- Social Security: 6.2% on wages up to the 2024 wage base of $168,600.
- Medicare: 1.45% on all wages, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000.
- State income tax: simplified flat-rate approximations per state. No-tax states (TX, FL, WA, NV, SD, WY, AK, TN, NH) are correctly handled with $0 state tax.
- Pre-tax deductions: 401(k) contributions and employer-sponsored health insurance reduce federal and (where applicable) state taxable income.
What we don't include
- City/county/local income taxes
- Tax credits (Child Tax Credit, EITC, etc.)
- Itemized deductions beyond the standard deduction
- Progressive state tax brackets (we use a simplified flat approximation)
- Bonus or supplemental wage withholding
- State disability insurance (CA SDI, NY SDI, etc.)
See our Terms for the full disclaimer.
Privacy
All calculations happen in your browser. Your salary is never sent to a server. Read more in our Privacy Policy.
Updates
We refresh tax tables annually as the IRS publishes new brackets and wage bases. Last data review: 2024 tax year.
Who we are
PaycheckCalculator.fyi is an independent web tool built and maintained in the United States. We're not a tax-prep firm, a payroll provider, or affiliated with any employer or financial institution. The site is funded by display advertising so the calculator can stay free for everyone.
Editorial standards
- Every number on this site comes from official IRS or state revenue department publications. We cite the year of the data we used.
- We don't accept paid placements in our guides. Sponsored content (if we ever add it) will be clearly labeled.
- When we discover an error, we correct it promptly and add a note explaining what changed.
- Our guides are written for typical W-2 wage earners. Specialized situations (1099 income, equity comp, multi-state withholding) are noted where relevant but aren't the focus of the calculator.
